Because the genetic patterns for Aussies tails vary in length and structure breed standards established in the USA describe a typical Australian Shepherd as having a tail of 4 inches or shorter. Unfortunately and completely unrelated to the bobtail gene normal Aussie tails may be considered unsightly or unappealing.
Most Australian Shepherds dont have tails because they are docked as puppies but not all of them. The actual size of an Aussies tail depends upon two factors. While you might see an Aussie with a docked tail this is becoming less common.
